Focus on James Dobson

A few days ago a Facebook friend posted the following:

My impression was the thoughts expressed were well-conceived, but that I had no use for the source, James Dobson. I mentioned this and was challenged. My response was “James Dobson. What more do I need to say?” Dobson, though well educated and held in esteem by many, is a high-profile bigot. There really is more that I need to say. Here’s for starters.

In the winter of 2004-2005, the We Are Family Foundation sent American elementary schools approximately 60,000 copies of a free DVD using popular cartoon characters (most notably SpongeBob SquarePants) to “promote tolerance and diversity.” Dobson contended that “tolerance” and “diversity” are “buzzwords” that the We Are Family Foundation misused as part of a “hidden agenda” to promote homosexuality. Kate Zernik noted Dobson asserting: “tolerance and its first cousin, diversity, ‘are almost always buzzwords for homosexual advocacy.'” He stated on the Focus on the Family website that “childhood symbols are apparently being hijacked to promote an agenda that involves teaching homosexual propaganda to children.” He offered as evidence the association of many leading LGBT rights organizations, including GLAAD, GLSEN, HRC, and PFLAG, with the We Are Family Foundation as shown by links which he claims once existed on their website.

Certainly it is refreshing to learn that “tolerance” and “diversity” are part of an agenda for homosexual advocacy, whatever that is. Certainly, for Dobson, homosexuality, and especially, homosexual marriage, have consequences far beyond the private lives of homosexuals and their life partners.

Focus on the Family founder James Dobson said Monday that the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary resulted from America turning its back on God, joining other conservative Christian leaders in assigning blame for Friday’s Connecticut shootings. Speaking to listeners of his “Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk” program, Dobson said God “has allowed judgment to fall upon us.”

Of course, this is startling news, and the liberal press has somehow overlooked these grave facts. The Sandy Hook shootings of last December were not the result of a schizophrenic mind in control of an automatic weapon but resulted from society’s turning its back on God. Of course, in his talk Dobson did not link the shootings directly to homosexuality and homosexual marriage, but these are some of his prime examples of society’s turning its back on God.

Moreover, Dobson has been enlightening on other occasions:

“Homosexuals are not monogamous. They want to destroy the institution of marriage, Dobson said.

“It will destroy marriage. It will destroy the Earth.

OK, marriage maybe I could do without, but the Earth? I’m quite sure the Earth would be missed. Dobson has more to say about God’s wrath:

In response to 9/11: “Question: Has God withdrawn His protective hand from the US?” James Dobson responds: “Christians have made arguments on both sides of this question. I certainly believe that God is displeased with America for its pride and arrogance, for killing 40 million unborn babies, for the universality of profanity and for other forms of immorality. However, rather than trying to forge a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the terrorist attacks and America’s abandonment of biblical principles, which I think is wrong, we need to accept the truth that this nation will suffer in many ways for departing from the principles of righteousness. “The wages of sin is death,” as it says in Romans 6, both for individuals and for entire cultures. ” – Focus on the Family website

So, is Dobson backing off on a direct link between disaster and the loss of God? Apparently sometimes he is, and sometimes he isn’t. It will be interesting to see Dobson’s future comments as the world goes forward and Dobson stands firmly planted in the past.

But, suppose Dobson is right in his strongest statements. Are we turning our backs on God, and are Dobson’s dire warnings warranted? At this I began to wonder: just when did society begin to turn its back on God? I searched back in history for that great event. It should be easy to spot. We need only to look for the point in history where disaster and acts of violence began to fall upon us. When would that have been.

Apparently homosexual marriage was not the sole source of God’s wrath, because it was not all that popular back in 1966 when I watched a deranged gunman use a university campus and the surrounding neighborhood for target practice.

God’s wrath could have started in the early 1960s, when the Supreme court decided to kick God out of the public class rooms by decreeing that government sponsored prayer was against the law. Of course, if that were the very moment society turned its back on God, then it would be difficult to explain World War 2, when Christian dictator Adolph Hitler arranged the murder of six million European Jews and ignited a war that claimed the lives of many millions more.

Maybe God was anticipating future events (God knows all, even the future) when he decreed that Europeans settling in the new world should enslave many thousands of black people from Africa, trade them like commodities and work them to death while murdering those who opposed their bondage.

God certainly knew in advance we would come to accept homosexuality and homosexual marriage when Europeans were invited to come to this continent and kill those already living there and take their land. Then, maybe not.

If Dobson is correct, then God really is a loving and giving and certainly an all-foreseeing God, who only wants what is best for us and will vent his spleen upon us if we step a little bit out of line.

Of course there is another explanation. That explanation would be that Dobson and his ilk are a clutch of self-centered fools who make up stories for other fools to justify the darkness that dwells in their deepest parts. The darkness is a blight of our own making and we can shuck it off without the help of James Dobson.
