Media Research Center

Number 3 in a series

From the MRC site

What this blog is all about is examining what goes on and what goes around and doing some analysis. To this end I subscribe to a number of resources, the Media Research Center (MRC) being one of them:

Our Mission: “To Create a Media Culture in America Where Truth and Liberty Flourish”

Since 1987, the Media Research Center (MRC) has been the nation’s premier media watchdog. We don’t endorse politicians and we don’t lobby for legislation. MRC’s sole mission is to expose and neutralize the propaganda arm of the Left: the national news media. This makes the MRC’s work unique within the conservative movement.

The Media Research Center’s unwavering commitment to neutralizing left-wing bias in the news media and popular culture has influenced how millions of Americans perceive “so-called” objective reporting.

Integrating cutting-edge news monitoring capabilities with a sophisticated marketing operation, MRC reaches nearly 203.6 million Americans each week to educate them about left-wing bias in the media.

The Media Research Center is a research and education organization operating under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions are tax-deductible to the maximum extent of the law. The MRC receives no government grants or contracts nor do we have an endowment. We raise our funds each year from individuals, foundations, and corporations.

The above graphic is from a video on the MRC site explaining what they do and how they accomplish their goals. I watched through this and picked up some of the message. One part of their message is that mainstream media (liberal  media) like to discard stories unfavorable to the liberal slant. That is illustrated in the cartoon by the shredder in the center of the picture. It’s shredding “bad liberal” news. The MRC says this a lot. I commented on it in a previous post:

They put out more stuff than I can cover, so I have to pick and choose. Here’s my most recent favorite (from the email):

Dear John,

The way the media is portraying the “riots” in Venezuela is awful. It’s quite frankly dangerous and irresponsible.

[some stuff]

As you probably know, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in response to catastrophic food shortages. Homicide rates in Caracas are now higher than any other city in the world.

This once wealthy and prosperous nation has been completely decimated by socialism and the meddling of Castro’s Cuba.

But you wouldn’t know that based on the media coverage.

So now we have it. You “wouldn’t know that based on the media coverage.” We would not know from the liberal  media of the wreck that socialist policies and meddling by Cuba made of the Venezuelan economy. Except, that is where I first learned about it. Also, if we depend on mainstream media for our news we would not know that the Trump Administration has condemned Russia’s crackdown on protesters:

By Nicholas Fondacaro | June 12, 2017 9:57 PM EDT

There was civil unrest in Russia Monday, as anti-corruption protestors [sic] took to the streets all across the country during a national holiday celebration. Roughly 1,500 people were arrested for gathering to denounce their government. The White House came out strong and condemned Russia for cracking down on the peaceful protestors [sic]. All of the Big Three Networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) reported on the mass arrests during their evening broadcasts, but they all ignored the White House’s condemnation of the Russian government.

So, the administration is condemning this action by the Russian government, and the networks are covering it up. Except that they are not covering it up. From ABC News:

Kremlin rejects US criticism of Russian protest arrests

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman is taking issue with White House criticism of the arrests of hundreds of opposition protesters.

Anti-corruption demonstrations took place Monday in scores of cities throughout Russia. More than 850 people were reported arrested in Moscow and about 500 in St. Petersburg, where the rallies were unsanctioned.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Monday said the United States “strongly condemns the detention of hundreds of peaceful protesters” which he described as an “affront to core democratic values.”

There is only one thing to take away from the juxtaposition of these two releases, and that is the MRC is lying. They do that a lot. I’ve been following MRC releases for months, holding off commenting to focus on softer targets. It’s time to engage in earnest with some Skeptical Analysis of the MRC, “Where Truth and Liberty Flourish.” Keep reading.
