Bear with me readers. I’m having a hard time keeping up. The Schlemiel-in-Chief is making stuff up faster than I can write it down. When you’re a schlemiel, sometimes that’s what you do. For a definition of the term follow this link.

So, what has Donald Trump offered up most recently? Not a list: “80 U.S. House Democrats are Communist Party members.” No, but something just as good. That trumps your list of 80 card-carrying communist, a list which former Congressman Allen West was unable to provide. Even though this list is 78 and not 80, it’s still a list. And it’s a list of terrorist acts the mainstream media would not want you to know about. Except that the mainstream media have been blabbing about these terrorist acts since September 2014.

Really?

Yes, really.

Not reported?

Not reported or else under-reported.

Then how about the ones that NBC covered or reported on:

Trump did not say why the media might not report on terrorist attacks but gave no examples of stories that went uncovered.

“They have their reasons,” he told the gathering. “And you understand that.”

A short time later, the White House provided a list of 78 attacks from September 2014 to December 2016 that officials claimed got short shrift from the news media.

A perusal of the archives revealed that NBC News covered 57 of the attacks on the list, which resulted in the deaths if 745 people — including the Paris terrorist attacks in November 2015, which killed 130 people, left more than 400 others wounded and resulted in hundreds of stories.

By contrast, the 21 attacks NBC News did not cover were smaller incidents in places like Egypt, Bosnia or Bangladesh, resulting in the deaths of just eight people, total. In a number of these incidents the suspects were described only as “unidentified” or “unidentified ISIL” operatives.

Also on the White House list was another terrorist attack that was covered widely by both the U.S. and foreign media — the December 2015 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, which killed 14 people.

And more, from the same NBC report:

The Trump team also claimed that the September 2016 bombings that terrorized New York City and New Jersey were not adequately covered. There are exactly 352 mentions of terrorist suspect Ahmad Rahami currently in the NBC News archives — this story makes 353.

The White House listed the October 2014 fatal shooting of a Canadian soldier at the country’s war memorial by a Muslim convert named Michael Zehaf-Bibeau. In NBC’ News’ are more than three dozen stories and/or videos.

What we have here is not a failure to communicate. What we have here is a failure to elucidate. Actually, a failure to tell the truth. Actually an effort to pass off alternative facts. Specifically an exercise in gross fabrication and outright lying. Pants must be smoking somewhere in the White House.

What I find most chilling is the venue Donald Trump used to disseminate his fabrications. He spoke these words to troops of the Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida:

You’ve seen what happened in Paris and Nice. All over Europe it’s happening. It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported. … And in many cases, the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons and you understand that.

What we see here is the head of the United States military telling troops, who work for him and have sworn to carry out his orders, that news reporters are being dishonest. The troops shouldn’t trust what is reported in the news.

politics-trumpcentralcommanddishonestpress

Where have we seen this before, ignoring the history of foreign dictators? There is the case of Major General Edwin Walker:

Edwin Anderson Walker (November 10, 1909 – October 31, 1993) — known as Ted Walker — was a United States Army officer who served in World War II and the Korean War. He became known for his staunch conservative political views and was criticized by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower for promoting a personal political stand while in uniform. Walker resigned his commission in 1959, but Eisenhower refused to accept his resignation and gave Walker a new command over the 24th Infantry Division in Augsburg, Germany. Walker again resigned his commission in 1961 after being publicly and formally admonished by the Joint Chiefs of Staff for calling Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman “pink” in print (a charge made by a leftist newspaper called the Overseas Weekly and never substantiated) and for violating the Hatch Act by attempting to direct the votes of his troops. President John F. Kennedy accepted his resignation, making Walker the only US general to resign in the 20th century.

As a side note, it is strongly suspected that in 1963 Lee Harvey Oswald took a shot at Walker through a window of Walker’s upscale Dallas home. Oswald later used the same rifle to kill President Kennedy.

President of the United States is a few links up the chain of command from major general,  making Trump’s action all the more odious. The United States military tends to be more conservative than the population at large, and using the power of his office to sway soldiers’ vote is a danger of real concern.

Donald Trump has been President going on three weeks, and his questionable behavior is increasingly grating, even on the nerves of some conservative Republicans.

I  had hoped for some letup by this stage in the saga, letup that would give me the slack to delve into my other favorite topics—creationism, anthropogenic global warming, and the North Texas Skeptics Paranormal Challenge. Fat chance. My recourse is to double up, causing my dear wife to intensify complaints of marital neglect. Only Jesus can save my marriage now.

Keep reading. And may Jesus have mercy on our souls.
