[Editor’s note: not a handgun death]
This meme popped up on Facebook earlier this year. It may have existed long before, since actor Samuel L. Jackson’s stand on gun legislation is well known. Jackson’s quote (above) is odd. He says he grew up in the South, and “we never shot anyone.” I grew up in the South, and we did shoot people. I personally knew two people killed by gunfire (pistols), and my grandfather, whose name I carry, was shot by his cousin on the family farm in Johnson County, Texas. Perhaps Mr. Jackson grew up in a sheltered world. Perhaps he is less than observant or even less than candid.
All that said, the value of having firearms around is without dispute. The daily news reassures us:
YACOLT, Wash. (KOIN) — A 13-year-old boy, accidentally shot by his 13-year-old cousin on Sunday, has died.
The shooting happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the 34900 block of NE Thompson Road in Yacolt, Sgt. Latter with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office said. The shooter’s parents were upstairs at the time of the shooting.
Yeah, y’all be careful out there, and keep your powder dry.
And keep this young martyr for the cause in your hearts and minds. He died so you could be safe.
