Your Friend The Handgun

We’ve seen this one before. A handgun comes in handy when you most need it. Here’s the story as it unfolds:

An Oklahoma cop is in his parked patrol car on the median in a construction zone along I-40. Presently he pulls onto the roadway and starts following a car. He radios in that the car was going 61 mph in a construction zone.

Presently the car comes into view.

The car pulls onto the shoulder and stops.

The cop walks over to the passenger side window and consults with the driver. He advises the driver he was going 61 mph, well over the limit for the construction zone. At one point he seems to ask, “How many of those have you had?”

The officer advises the driver to come over and sit with him in the patrol car while he writes out a warning ticket. Then the driver will be allowed to go about his business.

As the driver gets out of the car the cop notices something suspicious.

He asks the driver what he just put in his pocket. The two walk off camera to the right, and you can hear the cop asking a silly question, “You don’t have a gun or anything like that do you?” Then the cop shouts, “What are you doing? I will fucking kill you.”

The cop steps back into view, and he has his weapon drawn. He tells the man to drop the gun.

The man apparently does drop the gun, but he proceeds toward his car. The cop tells the man he’s going to get tased.

The taser goes off, but the man ignores it. He gets into his car.

And the chase is on. For some reason, when the car take off the trunk lid flies open.

High speed along I-40. The cop is on the radio telling what happened. The man pulled a gun on him. He dropped it alongside the road. The cop advises that somebody needs to go pick up the gun by the highway.

After several miles the chase ends. The driver exits the freeway, but he’s not going to make that turn. Dust flies as the car plows into some bushes on the other side of the road.

There’s much commotion. Other cops arrive. The cops spend a lot of time talking about the incident and the arrest. The cops have brought more than just a handgun to the fight.

It is fortunate for this drive that he had his trusty handgun with him when the police stopped him for going 61 in a construction zone and prepared to slap him with a warning. If he had been a 12-year-old black kid he would have been dead meat a long time ago.

A high-speed chase in Canadian County ended in a crash near the Cimarron Road exit. It started as a routine traffic stop on I-40 when authorities said Andrew Sawyers of Florida was traveling at a high rate of speed through a construction zone.

“When our agent approached the driver’s window, he noticed two empty beer bottles in the passenger’s seat,” said Mark Woodward, spokesman for the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.

When the driver was asked to step out of the vehicle, the OBN agent noticed him putting something in his jacket pocket.

“He asked the driver what it was and the driver reached into his jacket pocket and with two fingers he pulled out a weapon, a hand gun, and dropped it to his feet and immediately jumped into his car and took off,” Woodward said.

Officials said the driver headed eastbound on I-40 and that he was traveling more than 100 miles an hour for 25 miles.

The chase ended when the driver crashed into some tr
ees after exiting at Cimarron Road.

Sawyers was taken to a hospital for his injuries.

In addition to the handgun in his jacket, agents also found two rifles.

Sawyers faces charges including eluding a police officer as well as weapon charges.
